The possibility of multiple universes and multiple dimensions is not the stuff of science fiction. These discussions have been had throughout history. They were written about in ancient Greece, by Anaximander, and in Vedic scriptures, eastern philosophy and more. These concepts are found in almost every culture we know about, and span all centuries throughout human existence. This trend hasn’t stopped.
Today, there are multiple scientific theories that support the idea of parallel universes and multiple dimensions beyond our own, like string theory for example. Many researchers also base their ideas of parallel universes on quantum mechanics, the mathematical description of subatomic particles. In quantum mechanics, multiple states of existence for tiny particles are all possible at the same time — a “wave function” encapsulates all of those possibilities.
Coupled with these theories are also strange ‘paranormal’ events that have been witnessed by people over the years.
All of these factors and more make for an interesting discussion.
If There Are Other Dimensions, Do They Also Hold Life?
Plato once wrote, in his work, Phaedo,
“And upon the Earth are animals and men, some in a middle region, others (elementals) dwelling about the air as we dwell about the sea; others in islands which the air flows round, near the continent; and in a word, the air is used by them as the water and the sea are by us, and the ether is to them what the air is to us.”

Philostratus, who was called “the Athenian,” was a Greek sophist of the Roman imperial period. In his works, “The Life of Apollonius,” he explains,
“And they allowed Apollonius to ask questions; and he asked them of what they thought the cosmos was composed; but they replied; “Of elements.” “Are there then four?” he asked. “Not four,” said Larchas, “but five.” “And how can there be a fifth,” said Apollonius, “alongside of water and air and earth and fire?” “There is the ether,” replied the other, “which we must regard as the stuff of which gods are made; for just as all mortal creatures inhale the wire, so do immortal and divine natures inhale the ether.” “Am I,” said Appollonius, “to regard the universe as a living creature?” “Yes,” said the other.

It’s hard to know where to start because there are so many examples within the lore. Take Shambhala, for example, which is spoken about in Buddhist lore. It came to be known as a Buddhist pure land that exists within our own but in another dimension. It is a physical place with a geographical location as much as it is spiritual, and is said to be inhabited by very advanced and ‘enlightened’ beings. Its capital city is called Kalapa, which is located at the centre of Shambhala.
According to the Dalai Lama at a speech he gave in 1985 during the Kalachakra Initiations:
“Although those with special affiliation may actually be able to go there through their karmic connection, nevertheless it is not a physical place that we can actually find. We can only say that it is a pure land, a pure land in the human realm. And unless one has the merit and the actual karmic association, one cannot actually arrive there.”
According to Paracelsus, a German-Swiss physician and alchemist (like Issac Newton) who established the role of chemistry in medicine, in his Philosophia Occulta, translated by Franz Hartmann:
“Man lives in the exterior elements and the Elementals live in the interior elements. The latter have dwellings and clothing, manners and customs, languages and governments of their own, in the same sense as the bees have their queens and herds of animals their leaders.”
One of the best places to seek the answer to this question, in my opinion, is through the writings of Manly P. Hall. His work, according to Apollo 14 astronaut Dr. Edgar Mitchell, “is a classic in the world’s literature” that “will guide histories, philosophers and lay seekers of esoteric wisdom for centuries.”
In his book The Secret Teachings of All Ages, An Encyclopedic Outline of Masonic, Hermetic, Qabbalistic and Rosicrucian Symbolical Philosophy, 1928, he describes multiple beings that live within these realms, from nature spirits, to mermaids, Gnomes and more.
Here’s a description of Gnomes based on his research,
“The elementals who dwell in that attenuated body of the earth which is called the terrreous ether are grouped together under the general heading of gnomes. (The name is probably derived from the Greek genomus, meaning earth dweller.)
Just as there are many types of human beings evolving through the objective physical elements of Nature, so there are many types of gnomes evolving through the subjective ethereal body of Nature. These earth spirits work so close in vibratory rate to the material earth that they have immense power over its rocks and flora, and also over the human and animal kingdoms.”
Manly P. Hall, The Secret Teachings of All Ages
The above examples are simply a few of many to illustrate just how embedded these stories are within human history, and how they span across all ages. Coupled with modern day scientific theories and knowledge, it really makes you wonder about these realms.
It can feel frustrating because it’s so fascinating that one eagerly wants to peer into these realms to see truth. But can we ‘see’ truth? Can our own human senses even be trusted, especially when other realities aren’t even perceivable to them?
In the video below, Carl Sagan describes how a third dimensional creature trying to make contact with a second dimensional creature would be perceived by the second dimensional creature. He does a great job at explaining complex scientific ideas and making them understandable for most people.
What About UFOs?
UFOs are no longer a conspiracy theory, the topic has gone ‘mainstream’ and for many years the origin of these strange objects that perform physics defying maneuvers has been pondered by experiencers, military personnel, scientists and more. Many speculate that these could be extraterrestrial craft, while others speculate that they could originate from other dimensions as well. Both are probably a strong possibility in my opinion.
There is an FBI document that is addressed to “certain scientists of distinction,” to “aeronautical and military authorities,” and to “a number of public officials” that mentions this possibility. It’s one of many that do.
The document is a letter that was sent to the director of FBI in Washington from the San Fransisco office, on a matter pertaining to UFOs & extraterrestrials: It goes on to provide a copy of a letter written by someone with “several university degrees” and a former “university department head.”
The letter goes on to outline and state that according to this academic: (pages 21 & 22)
Part of the disks carry crews, others are under remote control.
Their mission is peaceful, the visitors contemplate settling on this planet.
These visitors are human-like but much larger in size.
They are not excarnate Earth people, but come from their own world
The disks posses some type of radiant energy.
They do not come from any “planet” as we use the word, but from an etheric planet which interpenetrates with our own and is not perceptible to us.
The bodies of the visitors, and the craft also, automatically materialize on entering the vibratory rate of our dense matter.
They re-enter the etheric at will, and so simply disappear from our vision, without trace.
The region they come from is NOT the astral plane, but corresponds to the Lakas or Talas. Students of esoteric matters will understand these terms.
I am sharing this document because anybody who has been a deep diver on the UFO phenomenon knows that what is mentioned above represents one of dozens of theories with regards to the origins of these objects.
Final Thoughts
Lore regarding topics of multiple dimensions, other universes as well as beings and worlds within these worlds have always been fascinating to me. I think it’s just human nature to explore the unknown, and it’s only natural to have a yearning for exploration and discovery.
Given that humanity has become somewhat robotic like, where everybody is so focused on surviving and fitting in within the system, it seems such exploration and discovery has been halted.
The basic fact that what is mentioned in this article has been explored and contemplated since recorded human history, coupled with modern day ‘paranormal’ phenomenon, suggests that there are concepts of reality we have yet to understand. These concepts will always defy what we think we know and challenge current belief systems, which is uncomfortable.
It’s why centuries ago the church condemned and jailed scientists whose discoveries threatened the accepted view of reality. We are not much different today, there is a great effort today to uphold political, religious and ‘academic’ ideologies, even if it means suspending investigation and inquiry into real phenomena.
“All perceptible matter comes from a primary substance, or tenuity beyond conception, filling all space, the akasha, or luminiferous ether, which is acted upon by the life-giving Prana or creative force, calling into existence, in never-ending cycles all things and phenomena.”
– Nikola Tesla, Man’s Greatest Achievement, 1907
What a great article, I’ve always been fascinated with these layers of reality. It’s one of my faves/
Fascinating article! Thanks for this.
